The wine that I decided to try for this weeks “Wine of the Week” was a 2015 Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina called Trivento Reserve. What first intrigued me about this bottle was that it was awarded “Best Buy 8 Years in a Row” by wine enthusiast. The second thing that caught my eye was the price. Originally around $19.99, it was on sale for about $9.99. I purchased this bottle in Scottsdale, Arizona at a large grocery store chain called Fry’s. I’m sure you could purchase this bottle at a grocery store or small, independently opened wine shop near you as well. This Malbec was very smooth and easy to drink. The notes included plum and raspberry jam, and a mix of vanilla notes from being aged in French oak barrels for 6 months. The bottle description described it as, “well balanced, with sweet tannins and a velvety finish”. I was able to pick up on the slight oak taste, and easily made out the taste of the sweet tannins. I paired this wine with New York steak, golden potatoes, French bread and a fresh green salad. Other food options that pair nicely with a fruity Malbec such as this would be: beef, charcuterie, pasta (think spaghetti and meatballs), fajitas, burritos, hamburgers and lamb. I recommend this wine for people who are just starting to introduce themselves to red wines, because it’s so light and easy to drink. This Malbec is airy and not too heavy.
